QGIS is free and open source GIS software which offers a huge array of features to support records centre work. Over the years that HERC has used QGIS we have developed a number of custom tools and shortcuts which can sometimes be shared more widely.

Creating custom plugins in QGIS

In Autumn 2025 HERC presented an ALERC Lunch 'n Learn session on creating custom QGIS plugins. The following resources accompany that presentation.

The session includes guidance on creating your own 'Placefinder' plugin that can be customised to your own area of interest, giving the ability to search for and zoom and pan the map window to different types of places.
